Legendary newsman leaves a legacy of public trust, respect

Journalists these days are as often reviled as admired, distrusted as trusted.

Walter Cronkite never had that problem.

In a career that spanned the Great Depression to the election to the first African-American U.S. president, Cronkite earned and kept the respect, trust and even love of the American people.

He dropped out of the University of Texas in 1935 and worked as a newspaper reporter before landing a job at an Oklahoma radio station as a sports announcer.
