Longtime country crooner Leona Williams returns to Texarkana for a show tonight at The Maytag Opry.
She and her son, Ron Williams, will perform during the opry venue's regular weekly show, which begins at 7 p.m. A meet-and-greet with the Williamses starts at 5:30 p.m. with CDs available and a chance to have autographs signed.
Missouri-born Leona Williams sang backup for both Merle Haggard and Loretta Lynn. She was married to Haggard and had a hit duet with him, "The Bull and the Beaver." A number of her other songs landed on the country chart over the years. She also wrote Haggard hits like "Someday When Things Are Good."
Williams got her start on radio at the age of 15 with her own radio show. George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Gene Watson, Ray Price and other country stars have recorded her songs.
The Maytag Opry singers will also be joined by two teenage performers for this special Friday night event: singers Marli Humphrey and Jonathan Dill, who is the newest and youngest member of the house band, said Janice Parks of The Maytag Opry.
"These two singers are quite a blessing to the music field and we are very proud of them at The Maytag Opry," Parks said.
