HOPE, Ark.-Dynamic and unique, the art glass creations by Pine Bluff, Ark.-based James Hayes will be displayed at the Southwest Arkansas Arts Council's Art Station Gallery from Tuesday through Dec. 6.

The phrase art glass may bring to mind the sort of wildly colorful glass sculptures made by the likes of Dale Chihuly. Hayes is similar but doesn't work on quite that grand scale. He does make chandeliers and what he calls "standy chandies," freestanding sculptures that look like the chandeliers. His glass art also includes bowls, jewelry, Christmas ornaments, stemware, cabinet knobs, vases and much more.

The artist's work at the Art Station Gallery will be on sale. Also, Hayes donated one art glass piece to SWAAC as a fundraiser. Raffle tickets are $5 each or 6 for $20, and they'll be drawn to find the winner on Dec. 8.

As an artist, Hayes has an idea where he's going but is open to other paths while making his art glass.

In a SWAAC press release, the artist said, "I use nature, chance and my emotions as inspiration for my art glass. My art is playful, adventurous, colorful and distinctive. When I make something I always begin with the end in mind. However, during the glassmaking process the design can change."

The Hendrix College graduate has studied the craft in Murano, Italy, and near Seattle. In his hometown, he runs the James Hayes Art Glass Co.

The Art Station Gallery is located at 200 E. Division St. Hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., open until 7 p.m. on Nov. 30 and Dec. 4.
