If local children need a post-Christmas outlet to unleash creative energy, parents should consider the Arts on Main art camps Dec. 26 through Dec. 28.

Run by the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council, Arts on Main offers three camps: Camp Create for children 5 and 6 years old, Picasso-rama Jr. for 7- and 8-year-olds and Picasso-rama Sr. for 9- to 12-year-olds. Camps go from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

"They're all general art making camps," said Dr. Becky Black, visual arts and community programs coordinator for TRAHC.

Each instructor has selected her own curriculum. Kira Suttee from Fouke High School teaches Camp Create. "She is teaching a curriculum based on Chinese New Year and Japanese New Year traditions, so that will be really fun," Black said. Private teacher Amanda Langley teaches Picasso-rama Jr., while Shea Phillips of Texas High School teaches the older Picasso-rama students.

All teachers are experienced and certified to teach, Black said.

With camps during Christmas week, it's a chance to give parents a break while keeping the children active in something constructive. It's a way for children to receive "a really important and meaningful arts experience" and something beyond "craft time," Black said.

"It's TRAHC's gift to parents," Black said, adding, "We do have needs-based scholarships available that parents can apply for for their kids."

Registration is $65, which covers all three days and all supplies. Registration online at TRAHC.org is open until camp starts. More info: Contact Dr. Becky Black at 903-792-8681.
