The Texarkana College Department of Music adds cinematic pizzazz to its program offerings Monday with a "Music and Movies" showing.

The program, titled "The Keyboard Family: Showing of Howard Goodall Video on the History of Piano," describes the creation of the piano and the history of various keyboard instruments, such as the harpsichord and clavichord.

"You get to see and hear some of the first pianos and see how the history of music develops along with the history of the instrument," said Mary Scott Goode, professor of music at TC.

The music department has quite a few recordings, DVDs and other resources to use in classes at TC, she explained. It's the first in a three-part series this semester for the music department.

"And we often think that it would be great to show some of these full length and to the general public. So what we are doing this semester is introducing a new feature to our series where we show a film or concert recording," Goode said. "We will have a question and answer time afterwards and also live demonstrations."

On Monday, the department will have the harpsichord, piano and organ open and will demo each instrument.

"You will be sitting 10 feet from a harpsichord while you learn how it works and the role it played in music history," Goode said.

Admission is free and the public is invited to this hour-long program. It starts at 7 p.m. in the Stilwell Humanities Music Hall.
