TWO HOMES ON SPRUCE CHANGE HANDS

Recent residence property transfers on Spruce Street are those of Louis Hellbron to Carl Clayton, for a neat five-room bungalow at 1012; and another cottage at 1004 Spruce to Earl Williams. Both purchasers will occupy the houses as residences.

BOYD CLUB GIRLS

BEGIN YEAR'S WORK

"Boyd Hustlers" began the second year of their existence as Miller county club members when election of officers and other business was transacted at their school Monday afternoon. Daisy McKenzie was elected president: Josie Mitchell, vice-president; Esther Tisdale, secretary; and Liddell Frost, reporter. Nine new members were added to the roster, and it was decided to meet every month.

ANNOUNCEMENT

OF PIANO SCHOOL

Mrs. Bessie Davis Taylor announces the opening of a piano school. Mrs. Taylor and Mr. Luther Davis have formed a partnership and will formally begin a new term March 1st. Mr. Davis will give harmony both in classes and in private lessons. Mrs. Taylor is now an authorized teacher of Progressive Series and will give examinations to any teachers wishing to join the great work of standardizing music in the state Studio at 412 Walnut, phone 952.

 

Feb. 21:

DIFFERENT KIND OF PARTY

The Baptist churches of the city will entertain with a tacky party at the First Baptist Church this evening as a get-together medium for the coming Sunday school teachers Institute, which is to be held at the First Baptist Church next week. An amusing program will be presented; among the numbers that are being looked forward to with keen anticipation being a rural school given by the ladies of Beech Street church, and a "Gossiping Ladies Aid Society" by the ladies of the First church.

EAST NINTH STREET ROAD WORK BEING PUSHED

Work on the East Ninth Street road is being pushed with the advent of better weather of late, Marion Jones, gravel inspector, states. During December and January it was not possible to do much on account of the weather. Hauling now is being done by motor trucks and greater headway is noticed.

POSTAL FORCE HERE

IS TO BE INCREASED

Post office facilities are to be increased here as soon as noon as it is possible to acquire the necessary elements, it was stated by the authorities yesterday. Hauling now is being done by motor trucks and greater headway is noticed.

WOMEN'S NEWS

Charles Miller is visiting members of his family for a few days, having arrived from New York, after making an ocean trip recently from France. He served four months in that country as a member of the A.E.F. and was a machine gun expert. ALSO, Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Scurlock are receiving the congratulations of their friends over the birth of a daughter. The newcomer has been named Fay.

TEXARKANA RECEIVES

MASSIVE HUD GRANT

A $1,474,000 grant approval announced in Washington will enable vital water and sewer improvements for Texarkana, Texas, City Manager Ben Mizell said. The matching funds, granted by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, were announced by Congressman Wright Patman. The grant will enable construction to get underway by mid-1969 on the $3,513,900 project with the city's funds to provided out of its basic water and sewage bonds, Mizell said.

 

Feb. 19:

FFA TO HONOR LOCAL MEN

The Northeast Texas Future Farmers will honor three area men by presenting them Honorary Lone Star Farmer Degrees at the 22nd annual convention tonight at the Texarkana College auditorium. Receiving the degrees will be Herman Lynch, Bowie County Extension Agent; Bo Granberry, teacher of vocational agriculture at Paul Pewit High school; and Lupton Willis, of Queen City prominent Cass County farmer.

TEXAS HIGH SENIORS

STAGE ORWELL'S '1984'

The stage adaptation of "1984" by George Orwell will be presented by the Texas High senior class February 20, 21 and 22 in the Little Theater at 8:00 p.m. The cast includes Winston, James Harris; Julia, Janis Copeland; O'Brien, Mike Brown; Loudspeaker, Barry Powell; Parsons, Penny Wells; Syme, Carl Simpson; Landlady, Beth Jacobs; Messenger, Betty McDonald; First Guard, Forest Miller; Second Guard, Dennis Landreaux; Martin, Donl Ebert; and Waitress, Lynn Kennedy.

"CITIZENSHIP" WINNERS ANNOUNCED BY DAR

Mrs. W. G. Eslinger, national defense chairman of the Texarkana chapter DAR, announces winners of DAR Good Citizenship medals. They are John A. Gillean III, Arkansas Senior High; Susan Lingo, College Hill Junior High; Beverly Kay Thompson, Jefferson Ave. Junior High; Marty Phillips, Arkansas Central Elem.; William McGuire, College Hill Elem.; James Harwood, Fairview Elem.; Cherylyn Dawn Gray, Union Elem.; and Richard Clements, Kilpatrick Elem.

 

Feb. 22:

MAN, 40, TEENAGE BOYS NABBED AFTER STOLEN MERCHANDISE LOCATED

A group of teenage boys and a 40-year-old man have been arrested by the Bowie County Sheriff's Department on charges of possession of stolen property. One of the boys informed the sheriff's office that some merchandise was located in a motel room in Nash. A search of the room uncovered a number of stereo tapes, a barrel and clip from a pistol, several tape players and speakers, said Sheriff Rachel. Those arrested were charged with possession of stolen property.

IN THE SERVICE, RECOGNIZED

Airman First Class Billy Purtle has been recognized for helping his unit earn the U.S. Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. The wing was cited for exceptionally meritorious service by providing reliable airlift of passengers and cargo to Pacific destinations. The airman is a graduate of Texas Senior High School. Airman Michael E. Mahaffey has graduated from a U. S. Air Force technical school at Keesler AB, Miss. The airman is a graduate of Arkansas High School. Airman Phillip Pegues has graduated from a U.S. Air Force technical school at Sheppard AFB, Texas. The airman is a graduate of Dunbar High School.

 

Feb. 24:

NAVY MOTHERS HAVE VALENTINE LUNCHEON

Mrs. Ora McGee was welcomed as a new member of Lela Lumpkin Club 868, Navy Mothers Clubs of America, during the club's Valentine luncheon. Hostesses for the meeting were Mrs. Maymie Martin, Mrs. Grace Sewell, Mrs. Marvin McAlister and Mrs. Lumpkin. Twenty-two members and two visitors attended the luncheon.
