Construction workers and interior painters continue to work on remodeling the Parkside Apartment complex at 1400 East 35th Street in Texarkana, Ark.

Renovations on the former Willows Apartment complex started at the end of 2017 and will probably take just under a year to complete, according the complex's local renovator.

Tony Asbille with Tony Asbille Construction said recently that ongoing renovations on the former apartments, located at 1400 East 35th Street, have already allowed more than 20 new renters to move into the complex, which was recently renamed the Parkside Apartments.

Asbille said it might take 11 more months to renovate and remodel all 229 units, but he said it can be done.

The apartments, which initially consisted of two complexes, opened in about 1973 with the first complex, known as Spanish Trace, opening closest to East 35th Street. The later complex, which opened in about 1984, south of the first one, was know as Spanish Trails. Combined, both complexes offered renters the total 229 units. These apartments consisted of one, two and three bedroom apartments along with some town-house style units.

The apartments were renamed the Willows sometime after 1997, but they eventually fell into disrepair over a 20-year period. The Willows was closed in October, 2017, and Asbille's remodeling efforts started in early 2018.

"Right now we are working on both the building interiors and exteriors,"Asbille said. "We are installing new roofs, with new shingles, we are also putting in new flooring in every unit and we are also repainting walls, installing new water faucets in the bathrooms, along with new stoves, new sinks, new counter-tops, new dishwashers, new cabinets, new refrigerators and other new appliances in the kitchens."

Asbille added that a former tennis court on the property will be converted into a playground for children, while property's swimming pool will be reopened.
