Temperatures to remain high for couple of weeks

It may be September, but summer weather will hang around a few more weeks.

Temperatures will remain in the mid- to high 90s for a couple of weeks before a gradual cooling begins, according to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, La.

Daytime high temperatures were near 100 Saturday and could be as high as 101 today, with the heat index making it feel several degrees hotter, according to the NWS.

"Unfortunately, there is not a chance of much rain over the next week or so, and it's going to stay pretty warm throughout much of next week," said Brandi Richardson, a meteorologist with the weather service.

However, the upper-level ridge that is keeping things hot should start to move east soon.

"That will give us some relief from the heat," Richardson said.

However, she said dew points on the lower side could mean more humidity even though the temperatures will be lower.

A forecast from Accuweather.com shows average highs this time of year to be about 90 degrees.

High temperatures are expected to drop into the upper 80s later this month, according to an Accuweather forecast. Low 80s are expected for high temperatures during the first week of October.

The extended forecast shows near or slightly above-average temperatures for most of this fall.

The NWS offers the following tips to prevent heat-related deaths:

n When working outdoors, stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade as often as possible

n Check on the elderly, sick and those without air conditioning

n Never leave children or pets in vehicles
