Scholar educates students on their schools namesake

Leading authority on Paul Laurence Dunbar holds special presentation at elementary

Students at Dunbar Elementary School got a special treat Monday when they heard a professional poetry reading dedicated to their schools namesake. Paul Laurence Dunbar, whom the school was named for, was the first African-American poet to attain national critical acclaim. Kathy Owen, Dunbars principal, said the writer was one of the most influential people of his time, and several schools across the country are named for him. Mondays presentation was given by Dr. Herbert Woodward Martin, professor emeritus and poet-in-residence at Dayton University, and arguably the leading authority on Dunbar...
