JDC to reopen within 10 days: Center closed March 22 due to a certification error, will be recertified

Editors Note: This is the first in a three-part series examining the future of local juvenile detention centers. The series continues on Monday and concludes Tuesday.

Pending a recertification inspection, the doors of the Bowie County Juvenile Detention Center will be open within 10 days. However, the ongoing statewide investigation into the Texas Youth Commission makes it hard to predict the future of any juvenile center in the state. ‘We all realize juvenile justice in Texas will be reorganized ... Everything is on hold’ said Bowie County JDC Interim Director Mary Choate. ‘Every area will need to be revisited. Choate said youth services in Texas are so up in the air now that the Texas Youth Commission may never be the same agency.
