CDC recommends seniors get shingles vaccine
Every year, more than 500,000 Americans get the shingles—an older, meaner sister of chicken pox—according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC recently began recommending adults 60 and older get the first FDA-approved shingles vaccine called Zostavax. Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chicken pox. It causes a painful rash usually appearing in a band or belt on the body. About 20 to 30 percent of people who get shingles go on to develop severe neurological pain called postherpetic neuralgia.
