Wet Weather Welcomed: Agent: Rain helped crops

County extension agents say this summer’s abundance of rain was welcomed by most local farmers and should result in an abundance of farm yields for rice, soybean, corn and milo.
Even though the heavy rains in late spring and early summer may have caused some trepidation about another Red River flood, for Texarkana area agriculture the showers seemed heaven-sent. Compared to the dry spell experienced during May, June and July of 2006 and 2005, two local agricultural officials say the rainfall nearly made up for the two previous years. Bowie County Agricultural Extension Agent Bret McCoy said except for some flooding in low-lying row crop fields near Red River, excess rain didn’t produce any catastrophic problems.
