Triple trouble takes down power for 17,300


Staff photo by Michelle Williams Travelers and locals alike were surprised to find out why gas pumps weren’t working in the city of Atlanta from approximately 11:20 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A cascading power outage that began at a substation in Marshall was the culprit.
Multiple malfunctions within minutes caused 17,300 AEP/SWEPCO customers in East Texas and Northwest Louisiana to be without power Thursday. “Within eight minutes, three things happened and our 69,000-volt transmission system locked out,” said Scott McCLoud, public information representative for AEP/SWEPCO. “Between 11:21 and 11:30 a.m., crews at our Marshall substation were working on breakers so that substation was off-line.
