Fire damages former classrooms

Crack pipes found in Ashdown building


Staff photo by Jim Williamson The roof of a classroom collapsed Sunday afternoon during a fire in southwest Ashdown. The building is owned by the Little River County Training School Alumni Association. Evidence of people sleeping in the building and crack pipes were found inside the building, said Arkansas State Police Special Agent Hays McWhirter, but it was unknown if the fire was started accidentally or deliberately.
ASHDOWN, Ark.—Crack pipes and evidence of people sleeping inside a former classroom building were found after the Ashdown structure was destroyed by fire, said an Arkansas State Police investigator.

But it’s unknown how the fire started Sunday or if it was intentional or accidental, said Arkansas State Police Special Agent Hays McWhirter.

The fire destroyed two classrooms and caused extensive smoke and water damage in the wing of buildings owned by the Little River County Training School Alumni Association. The building was on the north side of the campus of the former ...
