City provides aid to houses needing improvements
![]() Staff photo by Evan Lewis Laborers with Basil Rasheed Contracting clear out rotten wood from under a house on Laurel Street Monday in Texarkana, Ark. The house is one of the last to be rehabilitated through a grant by the city this year. The city requests state funding each year to assist low-income citizens living in poor conditions. Depending on the structure’s condition, some houses are rehabilitated, while others are torn down and rebuilt. Home rehabs and reconstructions are funded by a grant from the Arkansas Development Finance Authority. Projects must be done in units of five, so this year the city performed three reconstructions and two rehabs. The maximum provided for the year’s work is $425,000.
