MIT outreach program urges Fouke girls to try engineering

Staff photo by Tanner Spendley Aria Reynolds and Laura Zager, both students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, visited Fouke High School on Tuesday in an attempt to get more young women interested in pursuing a career in engineering. Seventh grade students sit in Nelene Harris’s classroom and learn about financial opportunities as well as different career paths in the field of engineering.
Fouke middle and high school girls got a glimpse into the field of engineering Tuesday as part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Engineering Outreach Program called Women’s Initiative.

“We’re just here to encourage engineering in young women and teach them about it because many have never heard about it. They don’t know what they (engineers) do,” said Aria Reynolds, a sophomore in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT. “We’re engineering students and we’re just showing them what kind of projects we work on and what they can do with it as a career.”
