Bidders pony up at area mustang auction

Feral horses offer connection to nation’s past

HOPE, Ark.,—Mustangs are an important part of American heritage.

The public got a chance to take that heritage home with them at the U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management’s Adopt-a-horse program held at Hope’s Livestock Coliseum.

The Spivey family of Cale, Ark., decided to attend the three-day auction in hopes of adopting a burro.

“Our family has about 200 acres with cows and we came to get a donkey. They are really good at watching after the livestock,” said Cecil Spivey. “We ended up getting a donkey and three mares.”
