Arkansas High School special education teacher Brenda Shellene “Shelly” Fant, who is facing a first-degree sexual assault charge, resigned from the Texarkana, Ark., School District on Monday, said Superintendent Russell Sapaugh.

Attorney Jeff Harrelson said Fant consulted with him before ending her employment with the district.

“We made that decision together. It’s best for the educational process if she resigns,” Harrelson said. “It was close to the end of the school year anyway.”

The resignation comes 10 days after Fant surrendered to police.
