Texarkana, Texas, was certified as an active retirement community Tuesday, becoming the ninth city in Texas to receive such a designation.

“One thing we’re stressing is ‘active’ retirement,” said Jeff Sandford, Texarkana Chamber of Commerce President. “We want retirees to come here and live and be a vibrant part of the community.”

Sponsored by the city, a task force gathered information and compiled an in-depth application that was submitted to the Texas Department of Agriculture in October. The program is a result of the TDA’s rural economic development efforts.
