Two Korean War veterans receive high school diplomas after 55 years
![]() Staff photo by Tanner Spendley After 55 years, former Texas High School student and former Navy Petty Officer Third Class James Spriggs receives his high school diploma. Spriggs quit school in 1951 to serve his country in the Korean War. To his right, Doris Brown, wife of the late Herchel Brown Jr., receives her husband’s honorary diploma awarded to him posthumously. Both Brown and Spriggs would have graduated from Texas High in 1953, but both decided to forego their graduation and serve their country. They gave up the safety, security and comforts of home, not to mention the chance to graduate and lead a civilian life. They felt the safety, security and freedom of their fellow countrymen came first. Despite their public education being nearly complete, Brown and Spriggs set aside their graduation in the spring of 1953 to joined to the U.S. Navy and serve in the Korean War. ...
