Degree awarded in honor of pioneering black law student
![]() Submitted Photo Precious Williams accepts the posthumous degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law on behalf of her cousin, Silas H. Hunt, the first African-American to enroll at a traditionally white institution since the Reconstruction. Hunt grew up in Texarkana and registered to attend the School of Law on Feb. 2, 1948. “Silas Hunt has served as a significant role model in the lives of many, and he remains a constant reminder of the importance of diversity,” said Cynthia Nance, School of Law dean. “The School of Law is proud to honor Silas for his efforts to break down racial barriers and to open the door for other minority students to earn a legal education.” The award was presented during its annual comme...
