An after going to bed Tuesday night, the Jamie Barron family in Simms, Texas, awoke to flames in their house, authorities said.

At 11:45 p.m. they heard the blaring of smoke detectors letting them know something was wrong.

“When I got up I could see a glow in the back of the house coming from my daughters’ bedroom,” said Barron. “When I got back there, the whole wall was on fire, her bed was on fire and she was in it.”

Barron was unable to determine if his 8-year-old daughter was sleeping soundly or if the smoke had rendered her unconscious. He made his way ...
