Divers probe murky depths for gun used in store clerk’s death

Staff photo by Tanner Spendley    The Arkansas Game & Fish Commision Dive Team and divers from across the state along with local and state police agencies worked together most of Monday in the search for a gun that was allegedly used in the murder of a Nashville, Ark., store clerk on May 26. The search effort was concentrated near the bridge over Wilton Landing in Little River County.

WILTON, Ark.—Divers spent Monday exploring the murky depths of Wilton Landing, searching for the alleged murder weapon used in a Nashville, Ark., homicide.

Investigators received a tip the pistol might be in the water late last week and began the search about 8:30 a.m. Monday, said Arkansas State Police Special Agent Hays McWhirter.

The search was a difficult one.

Divers estimated the water was more than 20 feet deep in some places and described it as “black water” with zero visibility.
