Big spill averted

Chicken oil seeps into drain creek

Staff photo by Evan Lewis A Highway 59 Environmental trackhoe operator, who chose not to give his name, moves dirt Tuesday afternoon to build a levee to stop liquefied chicken parts from spreading farther than Elliot Creek after a spill at Red River Biodiesel.
Liquefied chicken caused a mess at a wastewater treatment facility this week as it discharged into a drainage creek on Red River Army Depot property and headed toward Wright Patman Lake.

The chicken came from the Red River Biodiesel Ltd. plant, where it is converted to fuel. The treatment plant is owned and operated by the Red River Redevelopment Authority and serves the depot, Red River Commerce Park and Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant.

The spill was discovered about 7 a.m. Monday during a routine inspection. The treatment facility is not manned around the clock.
