Area youth will get a chance to throw a line in the water July 17 at the Miller County 4-H Fishing Derby at the Bobby Ferguson Park pond, across the street from the Four States Fairgrounds.

Gloria Taylor, administrative office supervisor at the Miller County Extension Office, says mostly inner-city kids come to the derby.

“It is just a program to get the kids out in the outdoors and something for them to do,” she said.

There is no cost to participate in the program, which is open to youth ages 9 to 19.
