NASHVILLE, Ark.—It was an emotional contrast Wednesday in the Howard County Courthouse during the mental competency hearing for the man accused in the deaths of two elderly Howard County residents.

When Calvin Bennett, 28, of Nashville, was escorted from a police vehicle and into the courthouse, family and friends shouted, "We love you, Calvin!"

In the upstairs courtroom, the first three rows on the south side of the room were filled with family and friends of Pierce "Ben" Odell, 79, and Mary Odell, 78, who were shot to death in late 2006, allegedly by Bennett.
