Judge asks for summaries on accused murderer’s mental state

Lawyers must file legal briefs by July 25 for a circuit court judge to make a decision on the mental competency of a Nashville, Ark., murder suspect.

Calvin Bennett’s mental competency hearing continued until nearly midnight Wednesday. He faces two counts of capital murder in the deaths of an elderly Nashville couple Oct. 30, 2006.

Ninth Circuit Judge Charles Yeargan asked Prosecutor Tom Cooper and Public Defender Tammy Harris to submit legal briefs summarizing the testimony regarding the mental competency of Bennett.
