A work release inmate from Arkansas Department of Corrections was arrested about 6:30 p.m. Saturday after he escaped, allegedly robbed a couple at a local restaurant and got into a life or death struggle with an officer over his gun, police said.

Joe Dean Keaton, 31, was being returned to the Arkansas Department of Corrections Community Supervision Division at 511 E. Fifth St. in Texarkana, Ark., when he escaped, said Lt. Doug Avery, spokesman for the Texarkana, Ark., Police Department.

Keaton was exiting a transport van when he fled the facility.
