For a south Miller County woman, a day of horseback riding ended in a search-and-rescue expedition Friday morning near the Sulphur River Bridge and U.S. Highway 71.

Patricia Crabtree, 57, and a friend, Lanita Cooper, were riding horses in the Sulphur River bottoms between Doddridge and Fouke when Crabtree’s horse became spooked, threw her and then fell on top of her, said Miller County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Bui.

Cooper was unable to get her friend to safety and called 911.

Due to the terrain, rescuers had to wait for ATVs to arrive.
