100 years later: Was the Rev. Dr. Maddox a HERETIC OR A Visionary ?

Controversial teachings sparked flames regarding salvation, the Bible

Photos courtesy Texarkana Museums System Research Archives  The First Congregational Church was established in 1908 and its worship center was at Sixth Street and State Line Avenue. Although the structure no longer stands, the Rev. Dr. F.E. Maddox served as pastor of the church for nearly 30 years before his retirement. The architects were Witt, Siebert & Halsey.

Schisms over religious issues can cause squirming in the pews.

But 100 years ago this month, a local Texarkana church became the center of a religious controversy that put one of its preachers in the hot seat.

The charge was heresy and the minister was the Rev. Dr. F.E. Maddox, pastor of First Presbyterian Church. He was tried and convicted by the Ouachita Presbytery, the regional governing body for the Presbyterian Church USA at the time.

Some thought him a heretic for his beliefs and teaching on salvation and inspiration of Scripture, but others hailed him...
