Evacuees arrive as Gustav takes aim

650 Port Arthur residents processed at Southwest Center

At least 12 buses and seven vans brought 650 Port Arthur, Texas, residents escaping Hurricane Gustav to the Southwest Center as of presstime.
As Hurricane Gustav rolled closer to the Gulf Coast Sunday, evacuees started flooding into Texarkana from the Port Arthur, Texas, area throughout the day.

Starting at about 11:20 p.m. Saturday and continuing periodically through Sunday afternoon, at least 12 buses and seven vans brought more than 650 Port Arthur residents to the Southwest Center. From there, they were eventually registered and assigned further transportation to shelters in Mount Vernon, DeKalb, New Boston, Redwater and Maud, said Texarkana Office of Emergency Management Coordinator Dave Hall.
