Evacuees begin trek home

Officials say lessons learned from Katrina, Rita made process run a lot smoother

The majority of Gustav evacuees who found refuge in Texarkana will be on their way home soon.

“We have been meeting this afternoon (Tuesday) and there is a plan in place to begin getting these folks back home,” Dave Hall, Texarkana Emergency Management coordinator said of the 1,500 evacuees from Port Arthur, Texas.

Evacuees could’ve been home sooner if not for the gusty winds kicked up by Gustav.

“The Department of Transportation will not allow buses to travel in sustained 35 miles an hour winds with big loads like that and high-profile vehicles,” Hall said...
