Heading HomeEvacuees thankful for help but eager to return to Port Arthur
![]() Staff photo by Evan Lewis Evacuees from Port Arthur, Texas, load their belonging on buses Wednesday before heading home after spending four days at Williams Memorial United Methodist Church in Texarkana. Williams Memorial is one of several churches that opened their doors to the 1,500 displaced that were brought to the Twin Cities. “All of my shelters are empty,” said Buzz Barron, executive director of the Texarkana Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. “My understanding is the special-needs shelters will be empty soon.” Evacuees, with their belongings stacked beside them, waited for buses early Wednesday under an awning outside Williams Memorial United Methodist Church.
