About 1,500 Gustav evacuees boarded more than 30 buses in the drizzling rain Wednesday and headed home to Port Arthur, Texas. The exodus leaves only a handful of special-needs evacuees from Port Arthur waiting to go home.
“All of my shelters are empty,” said Buzz Barron, executive director of the Texarkana Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. “My understanding is the special-needs shelters will be empty soon.”
Evacuees, with their belongings stacked beside them, waited for buses early Wednesday under an awning outside Williams Memorial United Methodist Church.
