School district steps up to the plate

Feeding close to 1,500 Gustav evacuees is a big job, but one local school district took on the task with gusto.

From lunch Monday to breakfast Wednesday, the Texarkana Independent School District was responsible for providing evacuees at more than 20 shelters in the area with hot meals three times a day.

“We needed a calculator to know the yield of everything,” said Beth Carson, director of the child nutrition program for TISD. “Then we simply got that many cases down out of the warehouse and prepared the food.”
