Texarkana Water Utilities officials are excited that changes at its water treatment plants have corrected high contamination levels and will likely prevent them from reoccurring in the future.

Organic matter in the water supplies last year reacted with treatment chemicals to produce trihalomethanes or THMs, which can pose a health risk after long-term exposure. Contact with chlorine has to be long enough to kill viruses and bacteria in the water, but not long enough to react into THMs.
