Port Arthur residents are taking a wait-and-see attitude on evacuation

Texas Gulf Coast communities have started to evacuate out of Hurricane Ike’s way, but residents of Texarkana’s sister city, Port Arthur, Texas, are staying put for now.

“We are monitoring the storm, letting our citizens know the plan,” said Sgt. Ken Carona of the Port Arthur Police Department. “All of the models still have this storm (making landfall) on the lower Texas coast around Corpus Christi. At this time we are on the outward edges of wind and we’ve been told by the National Weather Service that Friday evening we can expect 30- to 50-mile an hour winds if the storm continues...
