NEW BOSTON, Texas —The father of a 2-year-old girl beaten to death last year will spend the rest of his life in prison as part of an agreement with prosecutors that spared him the death penalty.

Neil Patrick DeWitt, 38, pleaded guilty to capital murder Thursday and accepted a sentence of life in a Texas prison without the possibility of parole. DeWitt will testify against his girlfriend, 26-year-old Latoya Smith, in her capital murder trial next year. His testimony is part of the agreement his lawyers made with the Bowie County District Attorney’s Office.
