HOPE, Ark.—The battle lines were deepened Thursday night between the economy and the environment during a public hearing regarding the proposed Southwestern Electric Power Co. power plant near Fulton, Ark.

The public hearing, sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, attracted about 300 in the auditorium of the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope. About 50 gave their opinions.

Supporters of the proposed Turk power plant stressed economics and jobs while those opposed said the plant would be a danger to the environment and health.
