Far from Home: Storms blow in Gulf Coast birds

Hurricanes Gustav and Ike swept a swarm of Gulf Coast birds into the region and delivered a treat for area avian enthusiasts.

Nine species of birds native to the Gulf Coast, including Magnificent Frigatebirds and Laughing Gulls, followed the eyes of the two recent storms and were spotted on lakes in Arkansas, said Charles Mills, curator of bird records for the Arkansas Audubon Society.

“When Gustav broke up, it was over Millwood Lake and the lake was full of new birds,” Mills said.
