Port Arthur mayor lifts evacuation order; residents can return today

After a week-and-a-half away, Port Arthur, Texas, residents may finally be able to return home after 6 a.m. today.

Port Arthur Mayor Deloris Prince is lifting a mandatory evacuation order enacted before Hurricane Ike slammed the Gulf Coast a week ago. Dave Hall, emergency management coordinator for the Texarkana area, said the local command will meet today to discuss a schedule of re-entry. Prince is working to coordinate transportation for evacuees with the state. She has ordered 25 buses to Texarkana to pick up Port Arthur residents, Hall said.
