Revitalization of downtown Texarkana will include cleaning up some unpleasant historic remnants, such abandoned, underground gas tanks. Texarkana, Ark., is planning to apply for two federal grants that would assist in the assessment and cleanup of ground contaminants in the downtown district.

Vacant or abandoned areas that could pose health threats through contamination are known as brownfields. Viewed as hazardous and unwanted for development, efforts are under way through the city and the Environmental Protection Agency to make them viable for commerce.
