Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe has declared 15 counties disaster areas because of damage caused by Tropical Storm Ike.

Miller, Hempstead, Howard, Little River and Lafayette counties in Southwest Arkansas were among those declared as disaster areas.

The declaration makes it easier for local governments to coordinate with the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management and other state agencies during response and repair efforts.

Carroll, Clay, Cleburne, Garland, Greene, Izard, Jackson, Randolph, Sharp and Van Buren counties were also declared disaster areas.
