NEW BOSTON, Texas—Despite indications that tax rates would remain the same, the Bowie County Commissioners Court voted Monday to raise the rate by a cent to 32.70 cents per $100 valuation.

County Judge James Carlow said the 1-cent tax increase was approved by the court as a way to fund higher salaries for Bowie County deputies whose current pay is lower than that of deputies in other Texas counties.

“We want their salaries to be favorably comparable and we can accomplish that with this increase,” he said.
