Cancer affects millions of lives every year, stirring volunteers to action to care for the sick and to find a cure.

During their annual meeting Tuesday, members of the American Cancer Society recognized local volunteers who’ve joined together in the fight against cancer.

“It’s people like you who are the American Cancer Society ... It’s kind of unique in that it is a volunteer organization,” Dr. Peter Racheotes, ACS president, told about 30 volunteers who were treated to lunch at Timothy’s, a local restaurant.
