Reading well into the future


Elizabeth Garvey is a volunteer tutor for the Literacy Council of Bowie and Miller Counties.
Elizabeth Garvey, a tutor for the Literacy Council of Bowie and Miller Counties, sees her work as an opportunity to give hope.

Two days a week, two hours each day, Garvey helps a group of young men from the Maud Restitution Center prepare for the GED test. Although she receives no monetary compensation for her time, she feels rewarded just the same.

“I get so excited over some of them sometimes. I’ll go to my mom or talk to my sweetheart and I’ll say ‘You know, so-and-so is doing so well,’ or, ‘Gosh, he’s working so hard,’ and that makes it all worthwhile,” Garvey said....
