No. 1 ranking senator retiring due to term limits

Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe said when Jim Hill, D-Nashville, started serving in the state Senate, “at first blush, he didn’t impress me.”

Beebe served in the state Senate for 20 years and said the senators could sometimes “be jerks” in assessing the potential of newly elected senators.

“But Jim Hill became a leader in the Senate. He was one of the best orators. It soon became apparent this guy was sharp and he knew what he was doing,” said Beebe.

The governor attended a tribute to Hill Tuesday afternoon at the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope. ...
