Just as Elijah of old passed the mantle to Elisha in the well-known Bible story, a local church is transferring the reins of ministry to a new congregation.

University Baptist Church will have its last official service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in a combined meeting with Vessels of Mercy Ministries.

The Rev. Steve Rushing has served as pastor of University Baptist for the past six years. From the beginning of his ministry, he said he has looked for ways the church could reach out to the community.
