PG student wins essay contest
![]() Submitted Photo Luminant representative Robert Gentry presents Jacob Coons, front, with a $1,000 savings bond for his essay “How can I help protect the environment?” The award is the preliminary of the Luminant Scholar Program. The school is now eligible for a $5,000 grant. As a result of Jacob’s winning entry, he and 19 classmates recently received new MP3 players. Pleasant Grove Independent School District Superintendent Margaret Davis, PG teacher Jana Mayo, PGMS assistant principal Kendra Powers and Grover the Hawk, played by Alex Miller, were present for the award. The program is designed to assist fifth-grade public school teachers in helping students learn about the environment and gain an appreciation for protecting the air, water and land. At a ceremony held in Pleasant Grove Middle School’s cafeteria, Luminant officials presented Jacob with a $1,000 savings bond.
