Hunters uncover 900 diamonds at state park

Nine hundred diamonds were found last year in the Crater of Diamonds State Park, with the 4.68-carat “Sweet Caroline” as the largest.

The first major find was April 14, when a Tennessee visitor found a 2.67-carat, white gem on the ground.

On July 12, 9-year-old Matthew Smith of Dallas found a 2.75-carat, brown diamond minutes after entering the search area near Beatty’s Hill. He named the cola-colored crystal the “Brown-Eyed Beauty” after his mother’s and sister’s eye color. It was his first hunt.
