Local observances of International Women’s Day begins with a Distinguished Women’s Luncheon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. March 7 at Southwest Community center, 3222 W. Seventh St.

Although IWD has been celebrated by women’s groups around the world since the early 1900s, the upcoming event marks the first local observance, said Tina Greer-Body, local spokeswoman.

“This is a progressed day in our nation. We will highlight 50 women as history makers,” she said.
